Ember's Note: This table was not created by me, but by a good friend of mine. I have merely converted the page to hypertext, and added links where appropriate. I have her permission to spread it around to anyone who is interested, but please note that the original file was written with word-of-mouth in mind for a San Francisco Bay Area audience. These suggestions are merely the collected gleanings of a concerned individual. There is always more to know, and more ways to help. If you have ideas to contribute to this file, drop me a line at ember leo at g mail dot com and I will bring them up to the author. Cheers!

Environmental Table: Lots of Ways to Live Green

This is a list of the things I've learned from various classes and books that are environmental steps a person can take for a greener, lower-impact lifestyle. This isn't everything an individual can do - it's merely a good start.

The word "environmental", of course, is huge and generic; to some people, it automatically assumes walking or biking everywhere. Others think this must include vegetarianism. Still others eat free-range meat, and try to avoid harmful cleaning chemicals. I am including all of these categories and more as considerations, and you can decide which of the measures are important to you.

The beginning of this document is a table of steps you can take, summarized very quickly. They are broken down by category (water, body care, etc) and by difficulty: Easy to implement, Medium difficulty, and Hard. I'm trying to account for both time spent and money spent, here. Weather-stripping your doors to block drafts is only a few bucks for a roll of stripping, and it's self-adhesive so it takes all of 15 minutes. That's Easy. Replacing your home's heater for a new, energy-efficient model is about $3,000 and will require some research time and installation time, so that's Hard.

Each of the table entries is described in more detail afterward. I try to list drawbacks when I know them, or pros and cons. Use the table as a quick checklist, and the sections following the table to learn more about the issues and additional information sources. After all the details are two more sections, Learn More and Cool Websites.
